Spring in July?

11 Jul

What a lovely day we’ve had today! Sydney reached a top temperature of just over twenty degrees C.: sunshine all round.

This morning, I spent some time by the river. Walking on the sands, turning from time to time to gaze at the water’s beautiful reflections, I suddenly saw a group of teenagers arrive. One carried a camera.

Everyone: especially those young and beautiful: loves being photographed. But I have to take my hat off to the pretty, dark-haired young lady who braved the freezing water in the name of art!

I’ve personal experience of very cold water, and I don’t intend to ever repeat it.  Most probably, the water temperature now is about twelve degrees: nevertheless, this young stalwart withstood it twice for the camera. I’m not sure whether her excited squeals were exacerbated by having an appreciative audience, but, in an odd sort of way, she appeared to be having the time of her life.

Oh, to be so young, and full of enthusiasm!

Still, at any age, one can still revel in the pleasures of a glorious, Spring-like day.

In Praise of Perfumed Gardens

15 Sep

Spring is really here, and I cannot resist strolling around the streets, looking at the gardens.

Amongst the most beautiful colours are the lilac shades of wisteria. Moments ago, I passed an old-fashioned house, resplendent with all the favourite blooms of yesteryear, but dominated by one: wistaria.

As if its heady perfume was not enough, interspersed amongst its tendrils were clusters of fragrant jasmine: announcing Spring so vividly that I defy anyone with a sense of time, place and charm to ignore it.

In the lawn, old-world freesias bloomed, strewn around as if by nature.

Ah, Spring: the season of the senses!

Spring is Here!

30 Aug

I’d scarcely taken a few steps outside when it hit me: the air seemed different, was different. Why? Spring is here!

With every breath, my brain became infused by perfume, sweet and heady. From street to street, the same lingering scent abounded.

I turned my eyes from side to side, seeing trees laden with blossoms pink and rose. Once in a while, my gaze found its mark at near-ground level; the fragrant freesias had done their bit, too.

Yes, Spring is here, so make the most of it, before the punishing winds arrive!
