A Joy to Watch: Spotted Dove

Spotted Dove

Spotted Dove

As I’ve mentioned before, a bonus of keeping Albert and Victoria (a pair of budgerigars) is the delight of seeing Spotted Doves (and occasionally, other birds) pecking their leftovers. The wild birds have discovered that I always tip the seed into a couple of disused flower-pots which are placed so that one can keep an eye on them. So often, when Ron or I look through the window, we see these charming, gentle birds at lunch.

Enjoy!

Peaceful Dove

28 Sep

One of the unforeseen benefits of having budgerigars as pets is the bonus of seeing other birds around. Outside, Albert and Victoria seem to attract other visitors, but none more welcome than these peaceful doves. These sweet birds come close to the budgies’ cage, gobbling up any wasted seed. But their favourite spot seems to be the pot-plants where, routinely, I tip the dregs of the seed-bowl.

Enjoy!

Our Pet Budgies

7 Sep

We share our home with two blue budgies, Albert and Victoria.

Albert is a very sweet little bird, with pale grey wings and bright blue face and body.  Incidentally, she’s a female; we misinterpreted her pale blue cere! Her favourite pastime is lifting the gate of his water-container, and letting it drop. Is she amused by the noise it makes?

The other bird, Victoria, is a large, sky-blue variety with a dominant streak a mile wide! As the second introduced into the cage, she’s asserted her position in the pecking order, and kept it!

They both love capsicum, celery, apple and lettuce as treats, but dislike going outdoors. Are they afraid of their wild relations?
