There’s a Cormorant on the Rock!

10 May

There’s a Cormorant on the rock!

Little Pied Cormorants are not an uncommon sight on the river, yet they seldom choose to rest on rocks, preferring instead to alight on man-made structures such as wooden poles, and the top of the shark-proof netting. So I think myself lucky to get a shot of one while it rested on a rock, just outside the swimming baths in Sydney’s Georges River.

Enjoy!

Although I see regularly see them, Little Pied Cormorants are far less common as visitors than their relatives, Little Black Cormorants.

The Pied ones are arguably more attractive, and some of my favourite photos are of this variety.

Elegant Pied Cormorant, Posing…

Little? Pied Cormorant

The bird in this photo looks large, but according to my references it is a Little Pied Cormorant. Well, it’s certainly pied, and it’s a Cormorant. But, little?

If experts are to be believed,  the Little Pied Cormorants and Little Black Cormorants are the only representatives of their species that inhabit the local river and wetlands.

Whatever its name, it’s still an elegant and eye-catching addition to the local scene.

Off I Go

Off I go, thinks this Little Pied Cormorant, moments before take-off.

Into the wide world…

These little birds fascinate me. They swim low in the water, and can dive and swim with enviable ease and efficiency, often re-appearing quite some distance away.

What I like most about this photograph are the colours, which to me reflect a quiet serenity.

That said, the pose adopted by this Little Pied Cormorant seems just right. Engaging, lively.

This photo was taken on a Georges River wharf.

Little Pied Cormorant

One of the delights of living near the river baths lies in the wonderfully high probability of seeing, and capturing images, of the birds that frequent there.

This image of a Little Pied Cormorant with its wings outstretched is, however, not an everyday sight.

I’m thrilled to be able to share it. 🙂

Time to Dry Off

Time to Dry Off

In the local swimming baths near where we live, water birds are a common and delightful sight. One of the most frequently-seen birds is the Little Pied Cormorant.

Their method of feeding — diving for aquatic animals– necessitates their habit of spreading out their wings to dry.

These small shags sometimes flock with their slightly larger relatives, the Little Black Cormorants.

Interesting characters!
