Here we have a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets surveying their handiwork: their family home.

But subsequent movements by them prove that it isn’t quite finished. 🙂

Nesting time: A Rainbow Lorikeet Takes a Look

Rainbow Lorikeet

Rainbow Lorikeet

Lately I’ve seen different types of parrots apparently competing for prized nesting sites.

But this Rainbow Lorikeet seems to be doing well. I’ve noticed this and its mate pair hanging around the hollowed branch, and no-one seems to care…

Making Their Nest

Nesting Rainbow Lorikeets

Nesting Rainbow Lorikeets

What is more heartwarming than watching prospective parents in the process of making their home?

In the case of birds, it’s all about nests.

Australia’s Rainbow Lorikeets put their creativity to work in tree hollows.

Here’s a pair that are engrossed in the task. I photographed these in the local park in a Sydney suburb.

Ready for Take-off

Better be quick…

This delightful Rainbow Lorikeet certainly has its eye on something.

I can almost see it taking off, swooping to the ground or perhaps an enticing flower.

Keeping watch...

Keeping watch…

What’s going on?

This Rainbow Lorikeet seems to be surveying the scene…

These parrots so often compete with the Cockatoos for the best nesting sites. Maybe there is something around that needs to be watched.

Wattle!

As children, we in Australia are schooled in the beauty of this plant. We are taught poems that speak touchingly of its delights.

As adults, many of us have to travel to natural bush areas to it see first-hand.

Here’s a photograph of one that grows in Sydney.

There are quite a few varieties, and I’m no expert. I ‘ll make a guess and suggest it’s Flax Wattle, but if you know better then please don’t be shy. 🙂

Enjoy!

Nesting Lorikeets in the Sydney Bushland

Nesting Rainbow Lorikeets

Nesting Rainbow Lorikeets

One of my favourite sights is wild Australian parrots. Every kind is unique and lovely to look at, from the small budgerigars through to the majestic Sulphur-crested Cockatoos.

Recently in the local park I spotted a pair of Rainbow Lorikeets tending to nesting duties. Naturally I grabbed my camera and started shooting.

Here is one of the results.

Getting There…The Life of a Lorikeet

20 Apr

Growing up and raising a family….an important part of many lives, not least of which is in the life of a bird.

Take Rainbow Lorikeets. These two are kept occupied, tending their nest.

I have no idea at what stage this project is at. Maybe they are still building. Perhaps there are babies.

At any rate, this is their home sweet home and they are diligently minding their territory.

What a Wonderful Life…

Rainbow Lorikeet in a Gum Tree

What a wonderful life!

This delightful Rainbow Lorikeet looks so alive and interested in its surroundings. And why wouldn’t it be? With friends galore, he (or she) need never be lonely. With abundant food of the freshest and most natural kind on hand, there’s a potential smorgasbord of healthy delights.

Although I see these birds quite often, their beauty and antics will, I’m sure, continue  to enchant me.

Australia truly is the Land of Parrots!
