Reflections of a White-faced Heron

Sometimes the river is so calm that it’s mirror-like. That’s when I love to take photos of the beautiful birds that call this place ‘home’.

My offering for today is a White-faced Heron: a tall, elegant creature that struts it stuff at low tide.

Cockatoo, eating

This Sulphur-crested Cockatoo  seems to be hanging on tightly to a tasty morsel.

I took this photo in the local park in suburban Sydney, Australia, and to me it typifies the delights of the Australian bush.

Here’s an Australian scene.

This shot was taken in the local bushland park in suburban Sydney, and shows plenty of Flannel Flowers in bloom.

They’re still out, months after they started. Simply beautiful!

Protecting Their Family: Ducks and Ducklings

Protecting their young: parent ducks.

Protecting their young: parent ducks.

There’s something special about the sight of parents with their offspring: particularly with something as sweet as ducks and ducklings.

This photo of  a family of Australian Wood Ducks was taken in the local swimming baths. It’s quite uncommon to see little ones, though their elders are a common sight.

Watching the World Go By

4 Jan

Chicki is now four years old, and she is becoming more and more patient. Today she sat quietly while the swimming races were on, even though she was left by herself for a little while.

Here’s a photo of her, patiently watching from one of the swimming club chairs. 🙂

Heading for Home: Ducks and Ducklings

Heading for Home: Ducks and Ducklings

Fresh from their long paddle, this family of ducks is heading for home.

I wonder where it is? It isn’t in the local swimming baths: the place that they had ventured to!

The babies are strong swimmers and keep up well with their parents.

Another Scene: The River and Flannel Flowers

The River and Flannel Flowers

The River and Flannel Flowers

Here we have a combination of two of my favourite sights: the river and Flannel Flowers.

Conditions permitting, I swim in these river baths most of the year. But the sight of the Flannel Flowers is not nearly so continuous. They flower only in the warmer weather.

A Rare Sight: Pelicans and Cormorants

Pelicans and Cormorants

Pelicans and Cormorants

It’s been a while since I took this photograph, but it’s still quite special. It’s a record of the one and only time I’ve ever seen a flock of Little Black Cormorants and a group of their huge cousins, the Australian Pelicans, together on the river.

I like this action shot of Little Black Cormorants. I took it recently in the local river baths, where these delightful little birds sometimes choose to play…

Little Pied Cormorant

Little Pied Cormorants regularly visit the local swimming baths in the river. But this little fellow has chosen a quite unusual place to rest. 🙂
