My Earliest Memory

22 Aug

It was my birthday, and I had just turned three.  My family: Mum, Dad, Grandfather, and my sister were all living in a very old, timber house near the city of Sydney.

My party was in full swing. The room, a very old-fashioned, Victorian style kitchen had been decorated, with a vase of poppies on the huge, farm-house style table.

Before I knew it, my birthday cake appeared, complete with small, coloured candles which I was required to blow out. Somehow I managed it, and then, to my absolute horror and embarrassment, everyone started singing, “Happy Birthday!”

Overcome by self-consciousness, I got off my chair and hid under the table, imploring all and sundry to stop!

How times have changed!
