I Really *Am* an Author…

8 Sep

I started writing my first book, ’25 Stories of Life and Love in Australia’, four years ago, next month. Naively, I thought it would be a one-off. 🙂

Eleven titles later, it’s still a nice feeling to be *reminded*, to have *concrete evidence*, that I *am* an author.

So, how proud I was when I visited Kogarah Library some months ago, to find my books on their shelves.

There, I knew it! I  really *am* an author. 🙂

Guess who?

Guess who?

Another Mystery: Birdwatchers, Help!

22 Apr

2013_0301imagefacebook0088Another mystery is on my hands.

Today I sorted through some photos and came across this.

Sure, it’s a parrot…But what is it?

I’m guessing it’s a Rainbow Lorikeet. Problem is, that it’s taken at an angle unfamiliar to me.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

The first three responses can chose from a pdf of ‘A Taste of Life and Love in Australia’ or ‘Long and Short Australian Stories’. Each of these titles contains a selection of romantic tales. Please state in your comment which title you would like.

So, if your penchant extends to both bird identification and Australian Short Stories, what are you waiting for?

I loved this book.

It was made up of a number of different stories of varying lengths (hence the title “long and short”) about different peoples’ relationships and following their dreams in spite of what people might think or try to talk them out of doing.

It was written in a way that made it easy and quick to read. The dialogue between people was well structured and set out.

If you’re wanting a light, fun and easy read for those lazy days on the beach or in your favourite reading spot then I recommend this book. You’ll be glad you did.

Ms Sharp has again provided us with a group of very charming short stories. From the young man who was too shy to make his move to the older gentleman who got a second opportunity many years later. In some cases, a door is shut while other opens according to the whims of Cupid. In other cases, interest gets involved. In A Taste of Life and Love in Australia, the author includes these lines: “So you would put an inheritance ahead of me? Ahead of our marriage? Is that what you’re saying?” This reminded me of Don Quixote and his squire Sancho during the Wedding of Camacho, the rich one (Don Quixote, Part II, Chapter 20) who while attending the festivities heard one of the players say: “I am the one that is mightier than Love… for I am Interest” (“Soy quien puede más que Amor… Soy el Interés”). There are other stories that seem to say: I make my own decisions. Others kindle an old friendship; others bring back an old love. Another great line of Ms. Sharp is: “Wasn’t mature love a horse of a different colour?” Almost as asking: Is there such a thing as mature love?
But I must confess that two of my favorite lines were: “life can change in an instant” and “you never know what’s around the corner” (most especially in love matters). Therefore, in closing, I sincerely hope that whatever happens to be around the next corner that can change your life in an instant is as lovely and charming as these stories. Nice reading, Five Stars, Jake Taylor

Boomer Lit: Here’s Some More….

18 Jul

I am delighted by the response to my recent post that featured a short extract of Boomer Lit, taken from my title ‘The Essence of Life and Love in Australia’. Thanks to all those who left comments!

This time, I’ve chosen a sample from my second title, the well-reviewed ‘A Taste of Life and Love in Australia’. I’m proud to say that this book has been accepted by the Awesome Indies Group, which has standards of admission equal to those of traditionally-published titles.

Enough of that. Let’s get down to the business of whetting one’s appetite.

LUCK OF THE DRAW

She strolled along the promenade, enjoying the hint of coolness in the mid-summer breeze. It was late afternoon. She’d spent an hour or two walking on the sands, pausing now and then to study the activities in the shimmering rock-pools scattered here and there. How she loved the roar of the ocean, and the delicious saltiness of the abundant sea-spray. It had been a favourite haunt of Tom and herself, twenty or more years ago.

She recalled the day he’d proposed to her, right there, by the sea. Her girlish hopes were realized when he produced that simple solitaire diamond ring. Overjoyed, she’d accepted , and they’d sealed their love with a kiss, and the promise of more. But their joy was short lived. Tom was killed in a car accident, before their wedding had taken place.

Absent-mindedly, she felt for her ring.

She was assailed by panic.

A Wonderful Surprise!

12 May

I suppose everyone’s psyche thrives on praise and recognition. Certainly, fiction writers struggling to be noticed would surely relish every scrap of positivity: and I’m no exception.

What a smile it has brought to my face!

Australian romance writer, Kate Loveday, has given me an honour of the highest degree. She’s listed me on Goodreads  as one of her two favourite authors, citing my second title, ‘A Taste of Life and Love in Australia’.

Wow!!

I’m overwhelmed!

Thank you, Kate!

If you enjoy romantic vignettes, maybe you, too, would find this title just to your liking!

‘A Taste of Life and Love in Australia’ Makes the List!

29 Apr

The vicissitudes of life can create joy, sorrow, or any number of emotions.  I for one like to dwell on the positive.

Therefore, it gives me great pleasure to announce that my second title, ‘A Taste of Life and Love in Australia’ has passed the criteria and been approved for listing by Awesome Indies.

Why is this so exciting? Well, it demonstrates that ‘A Taste…’ has been deemed to be of professional quality by a person qualified in the judgement of literature.

The ‘Awesome Indies’ list aims to assist readers in discerning and selecting well-written, evocative books. Spanning the genres, you’ll find high-quality titles.

Three years ago, who would have thought that a book written by myself would be amongst them?
